Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship

The Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship was established in 1996 to recognize the achievements of students pursuing a degree in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) or the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). Faculty members from departments in CHSS and CSE are invited to nominate students who show great promise toward making substantial contributions to society as a result of their liberal arts education.

Only students who have been nominated by a department from CHSS or CSE are eligible to apply for this award. Interested students are encouraged to discuss the scholarship with faculty in their academic department. Typical award amount is $4,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must be nominated by a department within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or College of Science and Engineering

  2. Applicants must be enrolled at Western Washington University full-time (at least 12 credits per quarter).

  3. Applicants should have at least three-quarters of coursework remaining before anticipated graduation, as of the beginning of fall quarter in the year of award.

Department Nomination Process - Deadline March 1, 2024

  1. CHSS and CSE forward the Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship announcement to departments.

  2. Department selects ONE student to nominate for the scholarship.

  3. Department notifies the selected student that they have been nominated and communicates their nomination to CHSS by sending an email to CHSS.Scholarship@wwu.edu by March 1, 2024.

  4. CHSS will send the nominated student a link to the Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship Application.

2024-2025 Application Process - Deadline April 26, 2024

  1. Applicants must be nominated by a department within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or College of Science and Engineering

  2. Applicants must complete the Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship Application and submit it by April 26th, 2024.

  3. Included with the application is a required essay that describes how the applicant anticipates making a substantial contribution to society as a result of their liberal education.

  4. Arrange for the nominating department to submit a letter of recommendation via the CHSS Scholarship Recommendation Form.
