English's Brenda Miller receives award for essay

Brenda Miller, Professor of English, has received the Bronze Medal in the Essay category for her book "An Earlier Life" (Ovenbird Books, 2016), in the 2017 Independent Book Publishers Awards.

Journalism’s Jennifer Keller Selected as a Participant in the 2017 Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy

Western Washington University Associate Professor of Journalism Jennifer Keller has been selected to be a participant in the 2017 Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy (SHALA) three day retreat June 11-14.

In partnership with the Scripps Howard Foundation, the Manship School of Mass Communication annually hosts SHALA for academics and professionals from various backgrounds. The Academy selects 12-15 participants.

This program is designed for new chairs, deans and directors, faculty and professionals interested in education leadership.

Western Libraries Announces 2016-17 Undergraduate Research Award Winners

Winners of this year’s Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Award will be honored at a small reception in the library on June 9, during which Dean of Libraries Mark Greenberg will publicly recognize the award-winning students and present each awardee with a certificate. Friends, family members of the award-winning students, the students’ faculty mentors, and members of the 2016-2017 Undergraduate Research Award review committee will also be invited.

Western Announces the 2017 Distinguished Alumni & Recognition Recipients

Western Washington University has announced its 2017 Distinguished Alumni & Recognition Award recipients, who will be honored at a ceremony and dinner on May 18 to kick off Western’s Back2Bellingham weekend.

This year, the association honors 13 alumni, a Campus School grad, and a family of 23 who carry on the Western legacy. Each recipient’s commitment to excellence and giving back is apparent and their impacts are felt by many, from those on Western’s campus to foreign countries.

Sandra Alfers, professor of German and director of the Ray Wolpow Institute for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity at Western Washington University, will discuss her research on the poetry of the Holocaust from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17 in Western Libraries Special Collections on the 6th floor of Wilson Library.

WWU Student Journalists Capture Three Top Prizes the SPJ Regional Mark of Excellence Awards

Western Washington University had three winners and several additional finalists in the Region 10 Mark of Excellence (MOE) Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) in Seattle on April 14.

            SPJ’s Region 10 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

State AG Bob Ferguson speaks to full house at Western

Western Washington University’s Political Science Department hosted a conversation titled, “See You in Court, Mr. President!” with Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson on May 2.

Ferguson recently filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the State of Washington challenging the constitutionality of President Trump’s Executive Order temporarily barring immigration and refugees from seven Muslim majority nations.

WWU researcher assists in discovery of two new tarsier species in Indonesia

Myron Shekelle, research associate at Western Washington University’s Department of Anthropology, is involved in an Indonesian study that has identified two new species of tarsiers - small nocturnal primates found only on several islands of Southeast Asia.

Journalism’s Sheila Webb Receives Covert Award from the AEJMC for the Second Time

Western Washington University’s Professor of Journalism Sheila Webb has received the Covert Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) for the second time.

The Covert Award, endowed by Catherin L.Covert, is presented by the History Division of the AEJMC to the author of the best mass communication history article or chapter in an edited collection published the previous year, nationwide.
