Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship

The Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship was established in 1996 for students of exceptional talent enrolled in what was then the College of Arts and Sciences and now the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) and the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). The scholarship is awarded to a student who in the judgment of faculty members who know them, seem most likely to make substantial contributions to society as a result of their liberal education.

Only students who have been nominated by a department from CHSS or CSE are eligible to apply for this award. Interested students are encouraged to discuss the scholarship with faculty in their academic department. Typical award amount is $3,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must be nominated by a department within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or College of Science and Engineering

  2. Applicants must be enrolled at Western Washington University full-time (at least 12 credits per quarter).

  3. Applicants should have at least three quarters of coursework remaining before anticipated graduation, as of the beginning of fall quarter in the year of award.

Department Nomination of Student

  1. CHSS and CSE departments forward the Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship announcement to their faculty asking for nominations.

  2. Department selects ONE student to nominate for the scholarship.

  3. Department notifies the selected student that they have been nominated and communicates their nomination to CHSS by April 20, 2020.

Application Process

  1. Applicants must be nominated by a department within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or College of Science and Engineering

  2. Applicants must complete the Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship Application form and provide required attachments.

  3. Included with the application is a required essay that describes how the applicant anticipates making a substantial contribution to society as a result of their liberal education.

  4. Student completes the application form, including all required attachments and submits the application to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (chss.scholarship@wwu.edu) no later than Friday, May 1, 2020.

  5. Department sends a recommendation letter to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (chss.scholarship@wwu.edu) by May 1, 2020 which complete the student's application materials.
