About
In the English major with an emphasis in Film and Media Studies, students engage with significant artistic, technological, commercial, cultural, and political developments throughout cinema and media history. They learn a language of analysis that equips them to communicate about and with moving images.
This major emphasis requires six core courses in film and media studies, focusing on the conventions of narrative cinema, topics in film history, equity and representation, major genres and directors, and film and media theory. Students also select elective courses in the field on such topics as documentary, experimental film, popular cinema, and various national cinemas from around the world. For the production course requirement, students can study screenwriting, videomaking, animation, time-based art, or other techniques of audio and visual craft. Finally, students take a required seminar/survey in 20th-21st century literature and culture, along with two upper-division literature courses of their choosing.
