Film and Media Studies

In the English Major with an emphasis in Film and Media Studies, students will engage with significant artistic, technological, commercial, cultural and political developments throughout cinema and media history. They will learn a language of analysis that will equip them to communicate about and with moving images.

This major emphasis requires six core courses in film and media studies, where students will study the conventions of narrative cinema, topics in film history, equity and representation in media, major theories in film and media, film genres and major directors. Students will select elective courses in film to specialize in topics ranging from: major films and media of specific countries and regions; and additional topics in history, genre, and theory. For a production elective, students can take a course in screenwriting, video workshops, animation, time-based art, or other studies and techniques of audio and visual craft. As an emphasis within the English major, students will also take a required seminar/survey in 20-21st century literature and culture, as well as two upper-division literature courses of their choice, ranging from topics in literary history, national and global literatures, gender theory, queer studies, literary genre, cultural studies, and other topics that expand upon each student's focus areas of analysis and craft.
