AI Policy
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
The Global Humanities and Religions department values teaching and learning, and thoughtful pedagogy. While technological tools can be useful, care must be taken to avoid undermining the core values of a humanities education.
Policy for Students
Students must follow the policy on generative AI in “Ensuring Academic Honesty” (POL-U20.04). In effect, it says that use of generative AI is not permitted for classwork unless explicitly authorized by the instructor.
Policy for Faculty
Faculty in the department of Global Humanities and Religions may not use AI in ways that conflict with the Faculty Code of Ethics, the CHSS Evaluation Plan and Operating Procedures, or any other applicable policy. The department does not permit faculty to use AI to assess student work or to generate syllabi or teaching materials wholesale. By college policy, faculty may not use AI in the process of faculty reviews. Any faculty use of generative AI in teaching should be carefully considered to ensure that it adheres to the values and objectives of the department.
Professors may have more extensive and specific AI policies in addition to this GHR-wide policy.
