English Area Concentration

The English concentration provides students with the opportunity to explore how the scientific study of language intersects with the study of English literature, writing (including creative writing), and English education. Courses in the concentration explore the grammatical structure of English (in the United States and around the globe); how English has changed over time (Old, Middle, Early Modern and Present Day English); how English varies over space (depending on variables such as region, race, ethnicity, gender, age, etc., shape language and identity), and how knowledge of these areas can enrich and inform teaching about language in school. Courses to choose from include:

English 436  The Structure of English

English 438  Topics in Language Change and Variation

English 439  Topics in Language and Linguistics
