Upcoming Scholarship Opportunities for the 2018-2019 Academic Year

Use the Modern & Classical Languages Application Form for the following scholarships:

Herbert L. Baird, Jr. Scholarship

The Herbert L. Baird, Jr. Scholarship has been established to recognize and encourage an outstanding student of the Spanish language and/or literature.
Herbert L. Baird, Jr. Scholarship Qualifications: Herbert L. Baird, Jr. Scholarship​ Application Procedures:
  • Declared major in Spanish; senior status fall quarter 2018
  • Minimum 3.00 grade point average, both cumulative and in the major
  • Obtain two letters of recommendation; one of the letters should be from a professor of Spanish.
 
  • Attach a statement explaining your interest in continuing study in Spanish.

Eunice D. Faber Scholarship

The Eunice D. Faber Scholarship has been established to benefit students who are Spanish majors.
Eunice D. Faber Scholarship​ Qualifications: Eunice D. Faber Scholarship​ Application Procedures:
  • Declared Spanish major showing promise of scholarly excellence
 
  • Obtain two letters of recommendation; one of the letters must be from an MCL professor.
 
  • Attach a statement explaining your interest in continuing study in Spanish.

Loomis/Hanley Foreign Language Scholarship

The Loomis/Hanley Scholarship has been established to provide support for a student preparing to teach a foreign language.
Loomis/Hanley Scholarship Qualifications: Loomis/Hanley Scholarship Application Procedures:
  • Junior standing or above; declared language major in teaching endorsement program
  • Request nomination by a MCL professor.
  • Minimum 3.00 grade point average, both cumulative and in the major
 
  • In addition to the nomination, obtain two letters of recommendation from MCL professors

Golden Family Scholarship

The Golden Family Scholarship has been established to recognize 2-3 outstanding students who major in Chinese Language and Culture.
Golden Family Scholarship​ Qualifications: Golden Family Scholarship Application Procedures:
  • Declared major in Chinese Language & Culture; junior or senior status fall quarter 2018
  • Minimum 3.00 grade point average, both cumulative and in the major
  • Obtain two letters of recommendation; one of the letters should be from an MCL professor of Chinese.
 
  • Attach a statement explaining your interest in continuing study in Chinese language and culture.

The Karen L. Freeman Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to recognize and encourage an outstanding student majoring in a foreign language.  
Karen L. Freeman Scholarship Qualifications: Karen L. Freeman Scholarship Application Procedures:
  • Declared MCL major
  • Recipient must have a record of high academic merit
  • Attach a statement explaining your interest in continuing study in language
  • Recipient must be a female student and/or a student of color
  • Attach an unofficial copy of your transcripts

 

Ingrid Stahlbrand Kassler Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to recognize and encourage an outstanding student majoring in German.  
Ingrid Stahlbrand Kassler Memorial Scholarship Qualifications: Ingrid Stahlbrand Kassler Memorial Scholarship Application Procedures:
  • Declared German major currently enrolled in German courses 
  • Completed scholarship application form
  • Outstanding academic merit: Overall GPA of 3.5 or above
  • Obtain one letter of recommendation from a German section faculty member
  • Demonstrated financial need. 
  • Attach a statement explaining why the study of German language, culture, and literature is important to you. Limit: 500 words
 
  • Attach an unofficial copy of your transcripts

Ingrid Stahlbrand Kassler Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to recognize and encourage an outstanding student majoring in German.  
Ingrid Stahlbrand Kassler Memorial Scholarship Qualifications:
Declared German major currently enrolled in German courses  Completed scholarship application form
Outstanding academic merit: Overall GPA of 3.5 or above Obtain two letters of recommendation; one must be from an MCL professor.
Demonstrated financial need.  Attach a statement explaining your interest in continuing study in language
  Attach an unofficial copy of your transcripts

Departmental Tuition & Fee Waiver Scholarship

This partial tuition/fee waiver was established by the Washington State Legislature.

Departmental Tuition and Fee Waiver Scholarship Qualifications:

Departmental Tuition and Fee Waiver Scholarship Application Procedures:

  • Declared MCL major of superior academic ability
  • Minimum one quarter on campus during the academic year of the award
  • Obtain two letters of recommendation; one must be from an MCL professor.
 
  • Attach a statement explaining your interest in continuing study in language.

Scholarship application checklist:

  • Completed Application Form
  • Transcripts (WWU and other colleges attended)
  • Letters of recommendation (see above for individual scholarship requirements)
  • Statement of interest (see above for individual scholarship requirements)​

All application materials for the above scholarships must be submitted to the the Department of Modern & Classical Languages by noon on Friday, April 27, 2018.
