Major Application and Declaration Procedures

Am I eligible to apply to the Kinesiology program?

To be eligible to apply to the Kinesiology program, you must:

  1. Be a current student at WWU (must be enrolled in at least one course at WWU during the quarter in which you submit your application)
  2. Have completed at least 75 quarter credits (multiply semester credits by 1.5 to determine number of quarter credits completed)
  3. Have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA (weighted across all college-level credits completed, including those from transfer schools)

There are no prerequisite courses for students entering the Kinesiology program.  However, there are several courses that students are encouraged to take before applying to the program that will help set them up for success in the major.

When is the application for the Kinesiology program open?

I am eligible!  How do I apply to the Kinesiology program?

Follow the link below to complete the Kinesiology program application webform (link will only work during application window) which will ask you to respond to the following:

  • Name
  • W#
  • WWU email address
  • Which Kinesiology major specialization are you applying for?
  • What's your WWU GPA?
  • How many total college credits have you completed? Do you have any transfer, AP, or IB credits?
    • Students with transfer credits from other colleges/universities need to email a copy of their UNOFFICIAL transcripts to Jen.Leita@wwu.edu. WWU transfer equivalency guide will NOT work for major application purposes.
  • Have you applied to the Kinesiology major? Are you a first-time applicant or current KIN major?
  • That's it! No essays, letters of recommendation, etc. needed!

Applications will be accepted from April 2 – April 12, 2024 to begin the Kinesiology major in fall quarter.

How are students selected for admission into the Kinesiology program?

We accept up to 140 students into the Kinesiology program per year.  Admission to each specialization (Pre-Healthcare Professions, Exercise Science, & Sport Psychology) is competitive and not all applications are accepted.  The number of students, per year, accepted into each specialization of the program are as follows:

    Exercise Science          Sport Psychology          Pre-Healthcare
               48                16                  76

Admission to each specialization (Pre-Healthcare Professions, Exercise Science, & Sport Psychology) will be determined on a space available basis after ranking candidates by GPA, from high to low.

If you would like assistance in determining which specialization best aligns with your interests and future career goals, please schedule an appointment with the advising coordinator for assistance.

When will I know if I was accepted into the Kinesiology program?

You will be notified about the outcome of your application 2-3 weeks after the application deadline, well in advance of registration for the subsequent quarter.

I was accepted! Now what?

Students admitted to the major are required to meet with the advisor, Jen Leita, to make a plan of study for completing the Kinesiology program and WWU graduation requirements. Conversion to major status will not be completed until after this meeting.  Admitted students should schedule a "Plan of study for newly admitted majors" appointment.  At the end of their advising appointments, students will be given the opportunity to accept or decline their offer of admission and Jen Leita will then submit majors declaration forms to the Registrar to officially convert accepted students to Kinesiology major status at which point they will be eligible to register for Kinesiology classes.

Students will also be assigned a faculty mentor, who they will meet with to discuss field experience/internship opportunities and future career plans.  Students may choose to be mentored by a different Kinesiology faculty member and students should contact the faculty member they would like to work with to request them as a new mentor.

A student must register for KIN 306 in the first quarter they are admitted to the Kinesiology major.  Failure to take KIN 306 in the first quarter will result in removal from the major.  If a student receives a grade of less than C- in KIN 306, the student must register for KIN 306 in the next quarter it is offered.

I was not accepted into the major.  What are my options?

If a student is denied entry into a Kinesiology major specialization, the student may apply again the next quarter to the same specialization.  For example, if a student is not selected in the spring for fall quarter admission to the Pre-Health Care specialization, the student can apply again in the fall to the same Kinesiology Pre-Health Care specialization.

Students may apply to a different specialization after a delay of one quarter.  For example, if a student is not selected in the spring for fall quarter admission to the Pre-Health Care specialization, the student can apply in the winter to a different Kinesiology specialization.

Students not admitted to the Kinesiology major should contact the Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center at 360-650-3100 for assistance with selecting courses and a major.
