PLSC 437 / SOC 437 (15 credits) with Professor Kristen Parris

Students are travelling to China during Spring 2017 with Professor Kristen Parris from Political Science and Professor Baozhen Luo of Sociology to study Chinese culture, community and citizenship.  Participants will have the opportunity to explore Chinese society and politics at the local level where individuals and groups define and remake their communities in the face of rapid change.

A powerpoint presentation is available here with details about the program.  For more information, please contact Professor Kristen Parris at Kristen.Parris@wwu.edu

Summer 2015 - South African NGO's in Development
PLSC 437G / HSP 437G (12 credits) with Professor Vernon Johnson

In Summer 2015 students traveled to South Africa to explore the growing role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in bringing social development to South Africa. They engaged in a rich experiential learning opportunity highlighting the history, culture, and politics of the region, while exploring the challenges that South Africans face and their many assets that contribute to community development. Students also examined grassroots and NGO-initiated approaches to community development and applied these perspectives to their own academic area of interest. Finally, students contributed to the well-being of the host community, Kurland Village, in the Crags region of South Africa.  For information about upcoming programs, please contact Professor Johnson at Vernon.Johnson@wwu.edu.  We anticipate this program will be offered again in 2017.

Here participant Emma Yuh Coleman shared a video of her return trip to South Africa in 2016.
