New Scholarship Fund for Sociology Students

Mick Cunningham, Sociology Department Chair, recently shared news of the newest Sociology Department Scholarship with department Alum.  Please see the message below.

Dear Former Western Sociology Graduate,

I’m writing from the Sociology Department at Western. Since becoming Department Chair, one of my highest priorities has been finding ways to make it easier for our remarkable students to complete their degrees. Like many of you did when you were students, our students have to work a lot. Many of them are also the first in their families to go to college. We have never had an easy way for people who cared about our program to contribute directly to our students. Until now.

On June 1st, as part of Western Give Day, we launched a new scholarship fund that was seeded by matching funds from current Sociology department faculty. I was amazed and encouraged that we received donations that surpassed over $2000 in faculty matching funds, even with relatively little advertisement of our project. In just over 24 hours we went from nothing to a scholarship fund of over $5000! I was inspired and humbled by donations of $10 from recent graduates and of $500 from grads stretching back to the early 2000s.

In an ideal world, I would love to see this scholarship fund grow enough that it could generate its own revenue in perpetuity. That’s a big goal—it would require getting to $25,000. But after seeing us raise $5000 in a day, I’m going to be optimistic!

I know that so many of us were positively influenced by professors and by the things we learned as undergraduates studying sociology. If you have a professor you’d like to honor, or if you feel like your sociological education has contributed to your success in life after Western, I invite you to contribute to this new scholarship fund. This is a very direct way to have your donation go straight to students in need. Asking for money isn’t exactly something that comes easy to me. But it is really easy for me to ask for help for our students. They amaze me regularly. We currently have over 300 majors! It’s something I’m proud to be a part of, and I hope you are as well.

You can make a donation here:

This a great way to pay forward what you got out of your time at Western and in our department. As the video on the link says, we truly are thriving.

  Kind Regards,
