Carolyn worked for a decade in print journalism as a reporter and editorial page editor. Her work earned Society of Professional Journalists awards for environmental, criminal justice, and investigative reporting. She teaches reporting, advanced (investigative) reporting, mass media law, and a senior research seminar.
Her research, which focuses on digital technology in the newsroom, has been published in Journalism, International Journalism Gazette, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, New Media & Society, Journalism Practice, Newspaper Research Journal, and the International Symposium on Online Journalism. She authored a 2020 book, Reporting on Race in a Digital Era.
Nielsen is a 2024-2025 American Scandinavian Foundation fellow conducting research in her father's home county of Denmark.
