What Classes Should I Register For?

The Department of Journalism offers three tracks to a journalism degree: news/editorial, public relations, and visual journalism. A combined environmental studies/journalism major is also available through the Department of Journalism and the Department of Environmental Studies. Regardless of the track students choose, there are core classes required for all students. If you are a freshman or are transferring with no classes in journalism, you should plan to take the following courses:

  • JOUR 190: Intro to Mass Media
  • JOUR 207: Newswriting

In addition, freshman and sophomores should also register for classes that fulfill the following:

  • General University Requirements (GURs)
  • Prerequisites for desired upper division courses

When Can I Declare a Pre-Major?

Declaring as a pre-major is an important first step to becoming a major. As a pre-major, students develop a plan of study specific to their major and academic interests, they are assigned a faculty advisor, and they are given access to the journalism Canvas page where important announcements and opportunities are shared.

To declare as a pre-major, the following criteria must be met:

  • Students must have completed at least one quarter at WWU to declare as a pre-major but may be advised during their first quarter. Transfer students will be accepted during their first quarter on campus.
  • Students must have at least a 2.50 GPA at WWU to declare as a pre-major. If you are transferring to WWU you must have at least a 2.50 GPA from the school you are transferring from.
  • To declare as a pre-major, students must meet with the department manager or program coordinator to fill out pre-major declaration paperwork.

If you would like to declare as a pre-major or have additional questions, please contact the department or schedule an appointment:
