Scholarship Centralization

- The WWU Scholarship Portal makes applying for scholarships simpler and easier for students.
- Students only need to complete one scholarship application and they will be automatically matched to the scholarships they qualify for, including Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Department scholarships.

Scholarship Details
You are applying to all available LLC departmental scholarships and tuition waivers with one application. Award amounts vary and average between $500-$2000, depending upon available funding per scholarship.
Eunice D. Faber Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Eunice D. Faber who was a professor of Spanish from 1959-1984. This scholarship is for a Western Washington University student majoring in Spanish. Recipients shall show promise of scholarly excellence.
Golden and Li Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established with donations from Mr. James J. Golden and Mr. Gong Li for Western Washington University students who are majoring in Chinese Language & Culture and demonstrate outstanding academic merit, as determined on a year-to-year basis.
Herbert L. Baird Jr. Scholarship
One annual award of $500 is to be granted to an outstanding student of the Spanish language and/or literature.
Upon receipt of a gift from Dr. Herbert L. Baird, through his estate plans, the budget authority has the prerogative to increase the number of annual awards, increase the amount of the annual ward(s), or both, depending on available interest earnings.
The recipient is to be selected by a scholarship committee of the department. The award is to be based on academic achievement and is to be granted in the spring to a junior(s) who will be a senior(s) in the fall.
Ingrid Stahlbrand Kassler Scholarship
This scholarship endowment is meant to provide support for students in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. When possible preference to be made for applicants who demonstrate financial need, outstanding academic merit, and are enrolled in German language and culture classes.
This scholarship may be used to pay costs related to educational expenses, including, but not limited to, tuition, books, study abroad, materials, supplies, etc.
Karen L. Freeman Scholarship
Karen Freeman, BA German ’78, spent her career working with The Boeing Company and rose to the position of Vice President of Finance, Commercial Aviation Services. Freeman established this scholarship in 2012 to support students majoring in foreign languages and business. Recipients should have a record of high academic achievement. Scholarship award alternates yearly between Business and Foreign Language majors.
Loomis/Hanley Foreign Language Scholarship
This scholarship honors Everett and Vernon Loomis, both of whom attended Western during the 1930s and died during World War II, and Martha Hanley, former student, and graduate of Western. Scholarship(s) shall be awarded solely at the discretion of The Western Foundation, but it is suggested that particular attention be given to awarding the scholarship(s) so as to provide for the teaching of foreign languages, with preference being given to the Spanish language.
Eligibility
Must be currently enrolled at WWU and plan to study full time (minimum 12 credits) at least one quarter of the 2025-26 academic year. Some scholarships have specific criteria and the committee will determine eligibility based on application.

Next Steps
The Scholarship Committee will review all completed applications. Announcements will be shared by end of May or early June via email. The earliest quarter that scholarship funds may be applied is Fall 2025.
