Sigma Delta Pi
The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi, was established in 1919 at the University of California, Berkeley. Its purposes are to honor those who attain excellence in the study of Spanish and Hispanic culture, encourage interest in Hispanic cultural contributions, and foster friendly relations between Spanish-speaking and English-speaking nations. Members become eligible to compete for scholarships and other awards at the national level. Western's local chapter, Omega Xi, offers opportunities for leadership and service.
New student members of Sigma Delta Pi are typically inducted once each year. In order to be eligible for membership, students must be at the third-year level in their study of Spanish, have completed or currently be enrolled in a 300-level culture or literature class, have at least a 3.0 grade point average in their Spanish classes, and have at least a 3.2 grade point average overall.
Potential candidates should contact Professor Charles Patterson for more information.
