Submit your English Declaration Form

Steps to Declare

Make sure you are completing all required steps in order!

For English Majors: 

  1. Identify which English Major you are interested in declaring
  2. Complete the prerequisites for declaring
  3. Meet with an English Advisor
  4. Submit a Major Declaration form

For English Minors:

  1. Identify which English Minor you are interested in declaring
  2. Meet with an English Advisor
  3. Submit a Minor Declaration form

Please note: the instructions on this page are meant for majors and minors offered by the English Department. If you wish to declare a major or minor through a different department, please refer to that department's specific declaration process. You can find more information on all academic departments on the WWU catalog.

Note Regarding Summer Session

Any declaration forms submitted during the first 1-2 weeks of summer session will be reviewed and approved on July 8th! Thank you for your patience.

Major Declaration

  1. Access the Student Academic Declaration & Change Form here.
  2. Fill out Section I: Student Information. You will only be filling out this section of the form. 
  3. Choose "yes" for "Add and/or Drop a Pre-Major or Major."
  4. Choose "yes" for "Declare a Pre-Major or Major."
  5. On the following line, type the English major you would like to declare from the following options:
    • Literature 
    • Creative Writing 
    • Literature with Teaching Endorsement 
    • Creative Writing with Teaching Endorsement
    • Film and Media Studies 
    • English Language Learner (ELL)/Bilingual Education Emphasis with Teaching Endorsement. 
  6. Select "no" for any additional questions that do not pertain to your major declaration.

  7. IF YOU ARE ATTENDING FALL A&R AND/OR REGISTERING FOR CLASSES ON THE SAME DAY AS YOUR DECLARATION: Please list English courses that you will be registering for in the "Student Comments" box. For same-day declaration and registration, the English Department needs to manually provide you with access to any major-restricted courses. 

    Example of a completed form, which includes the student comment, "I will be registering for ENG 320 TYE, ENG 301, and/or ENG 317 this afternoon
  8. When you’ve finished filling out Section I, scroll down to the blue box at the bottom of the form and in the "email to" field, type the following email: Elle.Starr@wwu.edu.
  9. Click "Submit" to submit the form the English Department.  
  10. Once you submit your Major Declaration Form, please allow a few business days for your declaration to be processed.

Minor Declaration

  1. Access the Student Academic Declaration & Change Form here.
  2. Fill out Section I: Student Information. You will only be filling out this section of the form. 
  3. Choose "yes" for "Add and/or Drop a Minor."
  4. Choose "yes" for "Declare a Minor."
  5. On the following line, type the English minor you would like to declare from the following options:
    • English
    • Creative Writing
    • Film Studies
    • Professional Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacies
    • Women's Literature
  6. Select "no" for any additional questions that do not pertain to your minor declaration. 
  7. When you’ve finished filling out Section I, scroll down to the blue box at the bottom of the form. In the "email to" field, type the following email: Elle.Starr@wwu.edu.
  8. Click "Submit" to submit the form to the English Department.  
  9. Once you submit your Major Declaration Form, please allow a few business days for your declaration to be processed.
