English - Multilingual Education Emphasis  with Teaching Endorsement Options (59 Credits)

Download the English - Mulilingual Education Emphasis, BA with Teaching Endorsement plan of study

This major is unique in that it leads students toward multiple endorsements – a Qualifying Endorsement in English Language Arts (Secondary) and an Additional Endorsement in ELL and/or Bilingual Education (P-12). The program focuses on developing the mainstream P-12 classroom teacher’s ability to shelter and support the instruction of language learners, who are at all levels of fluency, in mainstream classrooms, as they work to achieve state expectations in subject matter content. Some teachers with ELL endorsements go on to become school ELL Specialists. ELL Specialists are usually experienced teachers who have taught language learners successfully for several years and have previously earned the ELL endorsement. Many earn a master’s degree or National Board certification in ELL prior to becoming a school or district ELL Specialist. Teachers who earn the Bilingual Endorsement can also apply for the English Language Learner Endorsement.

The English – ELL/Bilingual Education Emphasis with Teaching Endorsement Options major leads to a baccalaureate degree without teacher certification. To receive a recommendation for state of Washington teacher certification with an English Language Arts endorsement, students must complete courses within the English – ELL/Bilingual Education Emphasis with Teaching Endorsement Options major as specified herein, pass the NES exam for English language arts, and complete a teacher certification program offered by a Department of Secondary Education as one of the following:

To receive the ELL and/or Bilingual Additional Endorsement, students need to complete the above requirements as well as complete ELL 434 Elementary ELL/Bilingual Education Methods and ELL 436 Seminar and Practicum for ELL or Bilingual P-12 Teachers during their certification program. A passing score on the ELL WEST-E is required by the state for the ELL endorsement and a passing score on the Bilingual Education WEST-E along with a passing score on the ACTFL language proficiency exam is required for the Bilingual Education endorsement. See the Secondary Education section of this catalog for program admission, completion, and teacher certification requirements. Regulations for teaching endorsement are subject to change. How to Teach English at the Middle or High School Level

Step 1: Complete an English Major with Endorsement

An endorsement is the subject area and grade level you are qualified to teach. A major and a teaching endorsement are prerequisites to gaining teaching certification from the Woodring College of Education. Learn more about teaching endorsements on the Woodring College of Education website.

The English major with teaching endorsement plans (listed above) combine English major requirements with the English Language Arts — Secondary Endorsement requirements to provide students with an efficient plan of study.

Step 2: Complete Teaching Certification

Teaching Certification is available through Woodring's Secondary Education Undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate professional program. This program is approximately +58 credits to be completed pre-or-post graduation as an undergraduate or post-baccalaureate. Review application requirements and important deadlines ahead of time to best prepare for certification. English majors with teaching endorsements are encouraged to review admissions information for Woodring's Secondary Education program early on in their senior year (or the year they intend to complete their major).

Alternatively, students can complete a Master in Teaching (MIT) program after you graduate with your BA. WWU MIT programs are available in Bellingham, Everett, or South King County for graduate students. WWU MIT application information & deadlines are available for each MIT program, which you can look up on Woodring's programs page.
