Undergraduate Student Scholarships and Funding

Every Spring Quarter, through the WWU Scholarship Portal, continuing students can complete a single, annual scholarship application to be automatically considered for all Western scholarships they may be eligible for.
The WWU Scholarship Portal uses existing data (GPA, major, minor, etc.) and the information provided in your application to determine if you meet the requirements for any WWU scholarships. If you meet the requirements and completed the necessary prompts in the application, your completed application will be forwarded to the corresponding review committees. Established in 1998 to honor former Western professor Bernard L. Boylan. A collection of his papers held at the Center for Pacific Northwest Studies represent an important contribution both to History as an academic topic and the History of the Bellingham area. This scholarship provides funding for both undergraduate majors and graduate students studying History who have demonstrated academic achievement.

Established in 1990 by former Western Faculty Athletic Representative and History professor Carl Schuler and Evelyn Schuler, former Student Health Operations manager at Western. This scholarship supports undergraduates majoring in History nearing graduation with demonstrated academic achievement.

Established in 2023 to honor the memory of Winston S. Carter who taught History and Social Studies in high schools across Europe and the United States. In his later years, he settled in Bellingham, Washington, where he not only taught but also attended courses through Western’s Academy of Lifelong Learning. This scholarship provides support for undergraduate students with preference to those pursuing a History/Social Studies major with the intent of becoming a teacher.

Funded through generous donations by alumni, parents, faculty and others to the History Department Scholarship Fund, this scholarship supports undergraduate History majors who show dedication and promise in the field. Awards are distributed based on demonstrated academic achievement as well as related activities and interests.
