Samantha Cruz-Mendoza’s campaign for Bellingham Port Commission
Looking to get involved in a local Whatcom County campaign? Join Samantha Cruz-Mendoza’s campaign for Bellingham Port Commission, district 4. Samantha is a candidate with a vision for workforce and economic development, environmental innovation and strong community engagement from the Port, to create more opportunity for Whatcom County. This is a nonpartisan race.
Candidate Relations (approx. 8-10 hrs/week, to increase mid-May)
- Complete endorsement questionnaires on behalf of candidate and actively solicit endorsements from local, statewide and national organizations
- Join campaign meetings and provide updates on endorsement acquirement progress
- Track local events relevant for the candidate to attend
- Work with social media management to create uniform campaign materials for disbursement (door hangers/postcards) and online posting (IG, FB and Tiktok)
- Ability to commute across rural Whatcom County
- Familiarity with local politics (preferred but not required)
Social Media Management (approx. 8-10 hrs/week, to increase mid-May) (communications/marketing experience preferred - no background in politics necessary)
- Post content regularly on Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok
- Audio video support (experience editing videos/graphics)
- Monitor comments and messages from the public, relay/flag information to the candidate at campaign meetings
- Work with candidate relations to create uniform campaign materials for disbursement (door hangers/postcards) and online posting (IG, FB and Tiktok)
- Translate social media content from English to Spanish (preferred but not required)
Preferred but not required: Bilingual in English and Spanish. Familiarity with greater/rural Whatcom County

Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities
As an intern, you will help with the following:
Candidate Relations
- Complete endorsement questionnaires on behalf of candidates and campaigns
- Join campaign meetings and contribute as necessary
- Conduct research and present results in a clear and concise format
Communications
- Assist in the production of flyers, web content, and other voter communications
- Write, edit, and distribute email blasts and earned media content
- Assist in organizational and voter outreach, and response
Social Media
- Assist in the management of social media pages, including making Canva graphics
- Analyze engagement on platforms and help develop social media strategies
- Work closely with staff to ensure messaging and branding are consistent
Through this role, interns will gain a general knowledge of the functions of a consulting firm, strengthen their political communications skills, work directly with political campaigns to gain an understanding of campaign operations, and make connections with elected officials and community leaders.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have the following competencies and skills:
- Strong interpersonal skills, experience meeting deadlines, and the ability to multitask
- Enjoys contributing to a supportive, fast-paced team
- Ability to work remote 15-20 hours/week
- Attention to detail and good organizational skills
- Clear and concise writing style
- Social media skills or marketing experience
- Familiarity with research tools
