Originally from Spokane, Washington Maurice Foisy received his B.A. from Gonzaga University, M.A. from Georgetown University (Washington DC), and PhD from the University of Oregon (Eugene, OR). In 1970, he joined the faculty of Western Washington University where he is remembered as a beloved colleague and professor, teaching his students to develop their critical thinking skills and actively engage in their learning. Among his most popular classes, was a course on Political Inquiry.
Foisy had a strong commitment to equality and justice that was evident not only in his teaching but, beyond the university, in his work with labor, human rights groups, and inside the Democratic party. He passed away in 2025 and is remembered with great fondness by those who knew him.
