CHSS Undergraduate Scholarships

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers several undergraduate scholarships, administered by the Dean's Office, each academic year.

CHSS Advancement Council Scholarship

The CHSS Advancement Council established this annual scholarship to support a student who is major in the humanities or social/behavioral sciences. This scholarship is supported through the college's Dean's Fund for Excellence and members of the CHSS Advancement Council.  In establishing this scholarship, the Advancement Council seeks to emphasize the value of a public liberal arts education and the importance of developing interdisciplinary education and the analytical skills it fosters. Elyse C. Alper Scholarship for International Studies

Don and Jan Alper established this scholarship in 2010 to honor and celebrate the life of their daughter Elyse and carry forward her lifelong joy of traveling and establishing friendships across continents. This scholarship provides support for students to have a robust academic experience in another country through study at a recognized university to further promote greater international understanding and goodwill. Barbara Ellen Maguire- Veith Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2015 by the Veith Family to provide support for students who have a demonstrated financial need and are pursuing academic work in research, internships, or summer projects in the behavioral neurosciences, health sciences including pre-medicine, or computer sciences. This scholarship is awarded in alternate years by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (even years) and the College of Science and Engineering (odd years). Mikulencak-Kohlmeier Advantages of Learning Differently Scholarship

The Mikulencak-Kohlmeier Advantages of Learning Differently Scholarship was established in 2017 by Lisa Ann Mikulencak and Bernhard Kohlmeier to provide scholarships to students with learning challenges in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The scholarship is a two-year award provided to students who have declared a major and/or minor through the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and have a documented learning disability as demonstrated through accommodations provided by Western's Disability Access Center and/or a documented IEP/504 plan from the applicant's high school. Paul Woodring Arts & Sciences Scholarship

The Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship was established in 1996 for students of exceptional talent enrolled in what was then the College of Arts and Sciences and now the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering. The scholarship is awarded to students who in the judgment of faculty members who know them, seem most likely to make substantial contributions to society as a result of their liberal education.
