CHSS Undergraduate Scholarships
The Dean's office of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers several scholarships each academic year to undergraduate students.
Applications for 2021-2022 will open March 1, 2021 with a deadline of April 19, 2021.
CHSS Advancement Council Scholarship
The CHSS Advancement Council established this annual scholarship to support a student who is major in the humanities or social/behavioral sciences. This scholarship is supported through the college's Dean's Fund for Excellence and members of the CHSS Advancement Council. In establishing this scholarship the Advancement Council seeks to emphasize the value of a public liberal arts education and the importance of developing interdisciplinary education and the analytical skills it fosters. The typical award amount is $2,000.
Sandberg Family Scholarship
The Roger Sandberg Family established this scholarship in 2019 to provide support for students who are enrolled in a major within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and have a demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students who have transferred to Western from another four-year university, community college, or technical college. The typical award amount is $1,250.
Western Alumni Association Leadership Scholarship
The Alumni Association Leadership Scholarship was established in 2008, to provide scholarship support for students who are active within their community, participate in leadership building activities, provide service to others, succeed academically, and have a demonstrated financial need. One award will be given to a student from a humanities discipline (Communication Studies, English, History, Journalism, Global Humanities & Religions, Modern & Classical Languages, or Philosophy) and a second award will be given to a student from a social or behavioral science field (Anthropology, Communication Science & Disorders, Health & Human Development, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology). The typical award amount is $1,000 for each student.

Elyse C. Alper Scholarship for International Studies
Don and Jan Alper established this scholarship in 2010 to honor and celebrate the life of their daughter Elyse and carry forward her lifelong joy of traveling and establishing friendships across continents. This scholarship provides support for a students to have a robust academic experience in another country through study at a recognized university to further promote greater international understanding and goodwill. Barbara Ellen Maguire- Veith Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2015 by the Veith Family to provide support for students who have a demonstrated financial need and are pursuing academic work in research, internships, or summer projects in the behavioral neurosciences, health sciences including pre-medicine, or computer sciences. This scholarship is awarded in alternate years by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (even years) and the College of Science and Engineer (odd years). The typical award amount is $1,500. Mikulencak-Kohlmeier Advantages of Learning Differently Scholarship
The Mikulencak-Kohlmeier Advantages of Learning Differently Scholarship was established in 2017 by Lisa Ann Mikulencak and Bernhard Kohlmeier to provide scholarships to students with learning challenges in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The scholarship is a two-year award provided to students who have declared a major and/or minor through the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and have a documented learning disability as demonstrate through accommodations provided by Western's Disability Access Center and/or a documented IEP/504 plan from the applicants high school. Mike Sharar Scholarship
The Mike Sharar Scholarship was established by Kerri Lynn and Tommy Inglesby to honor Mike Sharar (June 17, 1947 - March 24, 2009) who supported her as an undergraduate when she felt she could no longer pursue her education. The scholarship will be awarded annually to support students participating in a full-time internship during any quarter. The internship must be at least 20 hours per week and formally administered by the the University. Typical award amount is $750. Paul Woodring Arts & Sciences Scholarship
The Paul Woodring Arts and Sciences Scholarship was established in 1996 for students of exceptional talent enrolled in what was then the College of Arts and Sciences and now the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering. The scholarship is awarded to students who in the judgment of faculty members who know them, seem most likely to make substantial contributions to society as a result of their liberal education. Faculty are encouraged to work with their academic department to nominate a student for this award and only nominated students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
